FIFTY FOOT HOSE - Ingredients [1966-1967 US Psychedelic Rock]

CUIDADO!!

DANGER!! THIS HEARING CAN CAUSE BRAIN CRAMPS!!
RARE MATERIAL FROM THIS MOST UNUSUAL BAND FROM SAN FRANCISCO FROM THE 60s!! THE BAND BECAME BEST KNOWN AMONG COLLECTORS FOR THEIR 1968 ALBUM CAULDRON, AND HERE IS MATERIAL FROM EVEN BEFORE THE RELEASE OF CAULDRON AND TWO OTHER SONGS WERE TAKEN FROM THE EP WHEN THEY STILL CALLED THEMSELVES ETHIX IN 1966!! THESE SEVEN SONGS WERE RECORDED BEFORE THE CALDRON ALBUM AND ARE RAWER IN FORM AND EXECUTION THAN THE CALDRON MATERIAL. FOUR OF THEM APPEAR AS BONUS TRACKS ON THE RE-ISSUE OF BIG BEAT'S CALDRON CD - INCLUDING THE BEST NUMBER, THE JAZZISTIC "FLY FREE" - BUT THREE DON'T. OF THESE THREE TRACKS, "GOOD MORNING GIRL" AND "LOW DOWN MOSTLY" ARE MUCH MORE IN THE NORMAL PSYCHEDELIC VEIN OF SAN FRANCISCO 1967, BLUES-ROCK INFLUENCED THAN MOST OF THE MATERIAL ON FIFTY FOOT HOSE, WHILE "WAR" IS A MORE TYPICAL ELECTRONIC FREE-FREE. CRAZY POISON AND PSYCH THAT CAN CAUSE THE BRAIN!!

A collection of 10 previously unpublished dating back to '66 and '67 (pre-Cauldron) and two songs are taken from the 7 "of Ethix (pre Fifty) out of Mary Jane in '66!!

AUM - Live at Avalon Ballroom (US Blues 1969)

RARIDADE MÁXIMA!! UMA DAS GRANDES BANDAS MENOS CONHECIDAS DE SÃO FRANCISCO, AUM ERA UM POWER TRIO DE ROCK CLÁSSICO, INSPIRADO EM NOMES COMO JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE E CREAM!! LIDERADO PELO TALENTOSO MULTI-INSTRUMENTISTA E CANTOR WAYNE CEBALLOS. A BANDA CHAMOU A ATENÇÃO DE BILL GRAHAM PELA PRIMEIRA VEZ PELO PRINCIPAL FOTÓGRAFO DE SÃO FRANCISCO, JIM MARSHALL!! COM UM ÁLBUM LANÇADO NO INÍCIO DE 1969 (JÁ POSTADO AQUI NO BLOG), A BANDA FOI ESCALADA PARA UMA DAS AUDIÇÕES AO VIVO DE GRAHAM "SOUNDS OF THE CITY", COMUMENTE REALIZADAS NAS NOITES DE TERÇA-FEIRA NO FILLMORE WEST!! EM SUA PRIMEIRA NOITE DE APRESENTAÇÃO, NO ENTANTO, AUM REALMENTE DERRUBOU O PÚBLICO, GANHANDO TRÊS ENCORES E A MAIS LONGA OVAÇÃO DE PÉ NA HISTÓRIA DESSAS AUDIÇÕES!! ELES LOGO SE TORNARAM UMA BANDA DE ABERTURA POPULAR E SEMPRE APRESENTAVAM UM SET DE ALTA ENERGIA!!

ESTE SET, GRAVADO NO AVALON BALLROOM EM UM PROJETO COM THE FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS E GRATEFUL DEAD, NÃO É EXCEÇÃO!! ABRINDO O SET COM UMA FAIXA INÉDITA, “I NEED YOU”, WAYNE CEBALLOS IMEDIATAMENTE SE SOLTA E CHAMA A ATENÇÃO DO PÚBLICO!! O RESTANTE DO SET INCLUI UMA VERSÃO AO VIVO DE "LITTLE BROWN HEN" E UMA JAM ALTAMENTE IMPROVISADA EM "BYE BYE BABY" - DUAS FAIXAS DE SEU LANÇAMENTO RESURRECTION, DA FILLMORE RECORDS - ALÉM DE UMA EXPLORAÇÃO DE 13 MINUTOS EM "A LITTLE HELP FROM YOU", UMA FAIXA INCLUÍDA EM SEU ÁLBUM DE ESTREIA, BLUESVIBES!!

ONE OF SAN FRANCISCO'S LEAST KNOWN GREAT BANDS, AUM WAS A CLASSIC ROCK POWER TRIO, INSPIRED BY NAMES SUCH AS JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE AND CREAM, AND LED BY THE TALENTED MULTI-INSTRUMENTIST AND SINGER WAYNE CEBALLOS. THE BAND FIRST CAUGHT BILL GRAHAM'S ATTENTION BY SAN FRANCISCO'S LEADING PHOTOGRAPHER, JIM MARSHALL. WITH AN ALBUM RELEASED IN EARLY 1969 (ALREADY POSTED HERE ON THE BLOG), THE BAND WAS CAST FOR ONE OF GRAHAM'S "SOUNDS OF THE CITY" LIVE AUDITIONS, COMMONLY HELD ON TUESDAY NIGHTS AT FILLMORE WEST. ON HIS FIRST NIGHT OF PERFORMANCE, HOWEVER, AUM REALLY BROKE THE AUDIENCE, EARNING THREE ENCORES AND THE LONGEST STANDING OVATION IN THE HISTORY OF SUCH AUDITIONS. THEY SOON BECAME A POPULAR OPENING BAND IN 1969, AND ALWAYS PLAYED A HIGH-ENERGY SET.

THIS SET, RECORDED AT THE AVALON BALLROOM ON A PROJECT WITH THE FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS AND GRATEFUL DEAD, IS NO EXCEPTION. OPENING THE SET WITH A NEW TRACK, “I NEED YOU”, WAYNE CEBALLOS IMMEDIATELY LOOSES UP AND CALLS THE AUDIENCE’S ATTENTION. THE REMAINDER OF THE SET INCLUDES A LIVE VERSION OF "LITTLE BROWN HEN" AND A HIGHLY IMPROVISED JAM ON "BYE BYE BABY" - TWO TRACKS FROM THEIR FILLMORE RECORDS RELEASE RESURRECTION - PLUS A 13-MINUTE EXPLORATION ON "A LITTLE HELP FROM YOU", A TRACK INCLUDED ON HIS DEBUT ALBUM, BLUESVIBES.

ÑU – 1er Calella Camping Rock [1977 Spain Hard Rock Prog]

UM QUARTETO ESPANHOL LENDÁRIO FORMADO EM 1974 EM MADRID!! COM UM SOM POTENTE AQUI ESTÁ O SEU ÁLBUM AO VIVO GRAVADO EM 1977 NO 1º CALELLA CAMPING ROCK, UM FESTIVAL HIPPIE IMPORTANTE DE BARCELONA QUE DUROU 3 DIAS COM APRESENTAÇÃO DE 20 BANDAS DE ROCK PROGRESSIVO E PSICODÉLICO!!

REPOST: CEREBRUM - Eagle Death (1970 Spain psych blues acid rock)

REPOSTAGEM ATUALIZADA EM "ARQUIVO FLAC" E AGORA COM A EDIÇÃO COMPLETA, INCLUINDO TODAS AS SUAS CANÇÕES GRAVADAS EM 1969 E 1970!! CEREBRUM ERA UMA ÓTIMA BANDA ESPANHOLA COM VOCAIS EM INGLÊS E FAZIA UMA PSICODELIA SELVAGEM COM GUITARRAS ESTRIDENTES, GAITA DE BOCA E MUITAS DISTORÇÕES!! EDIÇÃO LIMITADA A 500 CÓPIAS!!

UPDATED REPOST IN "FLAC FILE" AND NOW WITH THE COMPLETE EDITION, INCLUDING ALL THEIR SONGS RECORDED IN 1969 AND 1970!! CEREBRUM WAS A GREAT SPANISH BAND WITH ENGLISH VOCALS AND MADE A WILD PSYCHODELIA WITH FUZZY GUITARS, HARMONICA AND A LOT OF DISTORTION!! LIMITED EDITION TO 500 COPIES!! VERY RARE AND RECOMMENDED POISON!!

A unique, bluesy, harmonica heavy album with some extremely confusing guitars and effects drenched ominous vocals!! Often two very unrelated elements occur simultaneously (like the clean piano and the fuzzy freakout guitar on the title track), and the results are really great!! Very psychedelic, and yet another album that proves the power and merit of archival release!! And one of the best album covers produced!!

Just when it was thought that their two initial singles were the only records, more material from the guys started to appear!! Someone apparently tracked down the guitarist, who still had all these songs saved!! And Thomas Hartledge, owner of Shadoks (bless his soul), was more than okay with releasing this material!! The version of "Eagle Death" found here is the original unedited version, over a minute longer than that found on the original single!! The other three previously released tracks are as they appear on the singles!! The remaining five tracks were recorded in 1969, live in the studio!! Some of them are more blues rock oriented than the hard psych ones released before!! But most still incorporate extensive fuzz guitar, keeping in the mold of the rest of it!! The last three tracks are all covers!! A gem!! Essential for all psych hard blues acid rock fans!!

BARRY BASTIAN DEFINE ASSIM AS CANÇÕES DESSE LP:
To Me’: Uma canção de verdade e luz.
Wade In The Water’ (alternate version) – original Unedited: Este e outros disponíveis em cartão de download/incluído no disco LP.

BOOGIE #1 (FEBRUARY 1968 - MAY 1, 1969)

2) John Barrett vocals, bass
3) 'Fuzzy John' Oxendine vocals, drums

Fevereiro de 1968: The Ark, Gate 6, Sausalito, Marin County, Califórnia

Queimado no chão.

Também no projeto: The Whispering Shadows. “Tínhamos um show constante no Ark”, lembra John Barrett.

BRAND NEW RECORDINGS FROM THIS POWERFUL POWER TRIO, CLEARLY INFLUENCED BY CREAM, BLUE CHEER AND JIMI HENDRIX!! BOOGIE WAS PROBABLY THE FIRST HARDS BLUES ROCK GROUP THAT ARISED IN SAN FRANCISCO, BEING FORMED BY BIG NAMES OF AMERICAN ROCK!! HAD BARRY "THE BEE" BASTIAN (CANNED HEAT), JOHN BARRETT (THE RYTHM DUKES) AND FUZZY JOHN OXENDINE (ROKY ERICKSON & THE ALIENS)!! PLAYED ON ALL THE LEGENDARY ROCK STAGES LIKE THE ARK, AVALON, FILLMORE AND MANY OTHERS, SHARING THE STAGE WITH BANDS LIKE BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD, QUICKSILVER, ACE OF CUPS, FLAMIN GROOVIES AND COUNTRY JOE & THE FISH!! HIGHLIGHT ON THE EXPLOSIVE SHOW THEY PLAYED AT THE SKY ROCK FESTIVAL, IN AUGUST 1968, TO AN AUDIENCE OF 150,000 PEOPLE, BEING THE FIRST OUTDOOR MULTIBAND ROCK FESTIVAL HELD IN THE UNITED STATES!!

UNFORTUNATELY, THE BAND'S TROUBLED HISTORY, WITH MANY PROBLEMS IN CONDUCT, WHICH INCLUDES DISGUISED DRUG DEALERS AND EVEN MARIJUNA ARREST, ENDED UP LEAVING THEM WITHOUT A RECORD CONTRACT!! THEY GOT INTO A LOT OF TROUBLE AND NOBODY WANTED TO BANK THE GUYS!! THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT A STUDIO DEMO RECORDED IN 1968 AT PACIFIC HIGH RECORDERS SURVIVES!! AND THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT WE HAVE HERE IN THIS POST!! THIS IS THE FIRST VINYL RELEASE OF THIS MATERIAL!! BEFORE THAT THERE WAS ONLY ONE PRIVATE CD RELEASED BY BARRY BASTIAN!! AND THE BEST!! HERE ARE 8 MORE EXCLUSIVE EXTRA SONGS, BEING SOME LIVE WHICH WAS WHERE THE GUYS PERFORMED THE MOST!! LIVE THEY WERE EVEN CRAZIER AND FURIOUS!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

BARRY BASTIAN DEFINES THE SONGS ON THIS LP THIS WAY:

‘In Freak Town’: This tune was my reflection of Haight-Ashbury when I first arrived in San Francisco, the lost people and drugs. That appraisal softened over time. I came to realize that this was a very special time, and that these people, all of us, were searching for a new truth to live by. Bless them all.
‘To Me’: A song of truth and light.
Wade In The Water’Old public domain melody with a kind of Eastern Ali Akbar Khan twist. Mostly I just played what I felt in that moment in the solo.
‘Prelude To Boogie’: We always started our gigs with a warm up instrumental jam. It was always a new creation at that moment. It was always the ‘Prelude to Boogie’, even though it was different every time. This recording was the last ‘Prelude To Boogie’ we ever played.
Chico Smoke El Ropo’: Was our pro cannabis tune.
‘I’d Hate To Lose You’: Was a love blues to a girl that broke my heart.
Wade In The Water’ (alternate version) – original Unedited: This and others available on download card/ included with LP record.

‘In Freak Town’ (acoustic): Recorded year’s later 1981- 1982 with acoustic guitar. ‘Merchant of Dreams’ as well.

HISTORY AND CURIOSITIES OF THE BAND:

BOOGIE #1 (FEBRUARY 1968 - MAY 1, 1969)
1) Barry Bastian vocals, guitar
2) John Barrett vocals, bass
3) 'Fuzzy John' Oxendine vocals, drums

February 1968: The Ark, Gate 6, Sausalito, Marin County, California: The very next night after Barry Bastian called John Barrett to inform him about the new drummer, the newly born Boogie, without rehearsal, debuted live at The Ark as opening act for Buffalo Springfield. “At the gig, I was introduced to our new drummer, and his girlfriend (a good friend to this day),” recalls John Barrett. “I never met Fuzzy before, and I was worried because we had no rehearsal at all, and were going to play songs that Barry wrote. It went great, I was worried about the drums, but he did fine, he was excellent, like he had been with us for years.” The Ark was an old converted steamboat (the Charles Van Damme, built in 1916) that shuttled commuters from Richmond to San Rafael for over 20 years. After being decommissioned and stripped of its parts, the old ferry sat landlocked, still sporting its paddlewheel, on Sausalito's waterfront, in the middle of the town's thriving houseboat community where, for example, the great late Otis Redding was living when he wrote his hit, ‘(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay’ the previous August. Infamous North Bay restaurateur Juanita Musson housed her late-night diner Juanita's Gallery there for three years before taking her famous clientele and irreverent hijinks to Sonoma Valley. Fred ‘Marti’ Martinez and Frank McGinnis then bought the Van Damme, cleaned up the boat's interior, and by 1965 they turned it into a plush after-hours nightclub called The Ark. It was run on a somewhat ad hoc basis, scheduling shows between 8pm or 9pm and 2am and then from 2am to 6am (when breakfast was served), and occasionally weekend matinee shows from 2pm to 6pm. Although there are lots of nice posters and handbills advertising the shows it was in many cases either wishful thinking or word of mouth that led to the artists named being included. As The Ark rarely had the money to pay performers, they were all fed a complimentary Huevos Rancheros breakfast in the morning in exchange for financial compensation. As such it became very much an after hours club for some of the San Francico bands (notably Moby Grape - who also used it as a practice venue during the latter part of 1966 and made their live debut there). By the way, it was supposedly that same night, in the middle of their debut gig, that the California Memorial Band's former bass player Mark Ryan sat-in with the band and “he broke my bass speaker, a Fender Dual Showman amp,” also recalls John Barrett. “The output transformer got cooked by playing with the cabinet unplugged. There is a safety for that if unplugged at the amp side, but not the speaker side.”

February 1968: Soon after their live debut, Boogie rehearsed together for the first time. “We had our first rehearsal at Burry Olson's Leather Shop at Gate 6 next door to The Ark,” recalls Barry Bastian. “It was definitely a cosmic event and was no doubt the first blues / heavy metal / rock band to come out of the San Francisco scene. I was staying in a little houseboat just across the water from Burry's shop. That night I went off to bed while visions of success danced in my head. I was then awakened by a frantic call that Burry Olson's Leather Shop was on fire. I look out the window and it was ablaze. I just rolled over and slept, it was too much for my brain. The next day I walked over to the shop, JB and Fuzzy arrived about the same time. We walked through the ashes; pickup up drum rings and speaker frames, and came to realize what starting from the beginning really meant. We just looked at each other and said: ‘Ok! I guess were a band.’ We scuffled around for equipment to use. JB’s Fender Showman was toast, my new TNT proto type amp that I had been using with Lee Michaels, was in the ashes, and Fuzzy’s good drum kit was in meltdown. JB had some how scored a new amp, Fuzzy had his older set, and I had my old Fender Bassmen, and some driver horns that helped project the highs in the big auditoriums. And so we begin. We more or less put the band together with our first gigs at The Ark. We were then allowed the use of the Moby Grape rehearsal space at the Heliport in Sausalito, for which we were most grateful.” “Burry let us set up amongst the belts, vests, and stuff he was making,” also recalls John Barrett. “A few days later, someone called me from the Ark and said Burry's shop was on fire. Burned to the ground. We lost all amps (including my Fender Dual Showman), drums and other equipment. We had our guitars with us so they survived. Friends helped, Don Wehr had a music store and helped us get new amps and drums. I bought a custom made Sunn amp. Barry got a custom Sunn amp with 6-12 inch speakers. Then I got a Martin Guitar too. One of our sponsors, Bob Black, aka ‘Blackie,’ gave me the $$ to get it. We also got another room at the Heliport and a great roadie, Bill Leidenthal. Next door was Blue Cheer, and across the hall was Electric Flag, next to them was the Sons of Champlin.” “This was when Bill Champlin and I became friends,” also recalls Fuzzy John. “Boogie and the Sons practiced at the same facility, and we saw each other 5 days a week.”

Friday, March 22 - Saturday, March 23, 1968: The Ark, Gate 6, Sausalito, Marin County, California: Boogie played from 2am to 6am each day. Also on the bill: The Whispering Shadows. “We had a steady gig at the Ark,” recalls John Barrett. “Every weekend playing the 2am to 6am slot, aka ‘the breakfast show.’ Bands finiship up at the Fillmore and Avalon would come over after their gigs and jam with us. I remember one night the Grateful Dead came and brought all the Fillmore with them, about 300 people. It was so packed that I thought the Ark was going to sink into the mud forever! All the bodies rose the temperature up to 37 degrees (98.6F)! So hot that one of my callouses broke off my finger and the bass became very difficult to play. Where a nice callous once was, now was a sore red spot on my finger. There were very few posters, if any, for these gigs.”

Saturday, April 6 - Sunday, April 7, 1968: 'A Benefit', parking lot outside The Ark, Gate 6, Sausalito, Marin County, California: Boogie played at a benefit dance, which lasted from 10am to 8pm each day, to raise money for five persons still in jail following the recent drug raids in Marin County. Buddha, who is organizing the events, asks that there be no free admissions in order that all five can be released. Also on the bill: Quicksilver Messenger Service, Ace of Cups, Freedom Highway, Phoenix, Pacific Flash, Morning Glory, The Smoke, Dino Valenti, Clover, Gail Garnett and Gentle Rain, and many more. “We had a house in Marin, next to the freeway so we could practice,” recalls John Barrett. “After the benefit, I distinctly remember going to that house for more party. From there we moved to Fairfax in late 1968.”

Monday, April 8, 1968: Pacific High Recording Co., Gate 6, Sausalito, Marin County, California: Boogie entered Pacific High, a very small recording studio opened few years earlier by music engineer Peter Weston, and recorded three songs: 'Wade In The Water', 'To Me', and 'In Freak Town'. These tracks remained unissued until April 22, 2022, when they surfaced in the band’s posthumous album, ‘In Freak Town’ (Out-Sider Records OSR090).

BELOW A GREAT STORY (written by David Pratt) TO BE READ AND UNDERSTAND BETTER WHAT WE ARE TALKING ABOUT IN THIS POST!!

In the 1960s, whilst the West was enjoying the likes of the Beatles, Elvis and rock music in general, the left-leaning Sukarno government rejected this “Western imperialism”, banning the purchase and sale of Western records and coming down heavily on Indonesian artists imitating western-style rock music and instead promoting its own brand of pop music. Harassment, even imprisonment, was frequent, and several groups fled to Europe, mainly, somewhat ironically perhaps, to the Netherlands, Indonesia’s ex-colonial master. All this changed, in 1965 with a military coup, led by Suharto, with Sukarno forced from power in 1967. Improved and closer relations saw Western industry, finance and culture flock into Indonesia, and as a result, the green shoots of Indonesia’s emerging rock music scene were encouraged.

During the late 1960s and early 1970s, the rise and popularity of psychedelic, folk, and eventually hard and progressive rock in America and the West was reflected in Indonesia, with iconic groups such as AKA and Shark Move needing to respond to their popularity by touring Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines and Australia. Under Suharto’s “New Order” regime, however, as in any such dictatorship, all forms of culture and art, including music, expressing an anti-government view or dissatisfaction was subject to censorship, or worse. The tracks appearing on this anthology that are concerned with ‘freedom’ in its broadest sense, are sung in English, thus escaping the censors. Indeed, at an extreme, because of their links with the OPM Papuan Freedom Movement,

Papuan band Black Brothers were forced to leave the country, seeking and receiving political asylum in the Netherlands. It is against this background that many of the songs presented here can be considered not only musically captivating but also truly rebellious.

The aforementioned genre of Indonesian music, Dangdut, is, in essence, a fascinating hybrid that incorporates, and is influenced by, Indian Bollywood film music, Arabic and Malay harmonies and melodies, together with Western rock guitars. Whilst this dance-friendly pop music was shunned and sneered at by many of Indonesia’s rock bands, some had no qualms in featuring traditional drum rhythms, sitars and Malay folk melodies into their music alongside their fuzzy electric guitars. Panbers, household names in their home country, even supporting The Bee Gees in Jakarta in 1974, are one such group and they open this collection with their contribution Haai, as psychedelic a slice of rock as you could hope for. In a similar vein, the raga-like qualities of Didunia Yang Lain, from the Ariesta Birawa Group, suggest a group drinking from a musical source far removed from Indonesia.

From the rockier end of the spectrum hard rock sounds are provided by Duo Kribo, regarded as Indonesia’s supergroup in this genre, whilst the raunchy Terenchem, renowned for exuberant stage shows involving kilts, coffins and snakes, provide Jeritan Cinta, from their second album, featuring droning fuzz guitar and insistent drum & bass interplay. Six-piece hard rock band Freedom of Rhapsodia, legends in Bandung, evoke the sound of Deep Purple here with Freedom, a track sung in English that escaped the censors. Heavily influenced by British bands, Golden Wing created what they termed the ‘Indo Rock Sound’, an amalgamation of Indonesian melodies and Western rock influences, introducing the country to the mini-Moog in the process. Hear Me, their contribution here is redolent of Uriah Heep.

Medan, North Sumatra, can hardly be seen as a hotbed of rock music, it did, however, spawn at least one successful group, Rhythm Kings, who relocated to Jakarta in 1970 to record their first rock album, from which The Promise is taken, a keyboards-dominated track with quite blistering guitar work. Also providing a somewhat uncharacteristic, for them, sound are Koes Plus, who whilst acknowledged as the kings of pop with a prolific recorded output, displayed a rockier edge with their Hard Beat album series, from where their Mobil Tua track is taken. This is almost certainly thanks to the influence on the three Koes brothers of drummer Murry.

Two tracks on the compilation are provided by AKA, one of Indonesia’s best known hard rock groups. Do What You Like, from the album of the same name, expresses sentiments of hedonism and rebellion, whilst Shake Me is nine minutes of unadulterated funk-rock. Funkiest of all, however, is The Rollies, another group formed in Bandung, here performing Bad News, from their eponymous album, featuring the raucous vocals of Bangun Sugito, (Gito Rollies), and Black Brothers, with Saman Doye, a funk-rock rendition of a traditional Papuan folk song, whilst Superkid’s People is the jewel in the Stevie Wonder Superstition mould.

With lesser-known bands such as The Brims, with their garage-pop rockAnti Gandja, the IVO’s Group, who provided the inspiration for the compilation’s title with their That Shocking Shaking Day, and the obscure Rasela whose Pemain Bola, with its fuzz guitar lead and intertwined bass & drum patterns pays homage to the favourite sport, (the song’s title translates as ‘football player’), a track from perhaps Indonesia’s most accomplished and prolific artist, the late Djauhar Zaharsjah Fachrudin “Harry” Roesli, represented here in The Gang of Harry Roesli, together with the ska-influenced Pantun Lama, from the already-mentioned Murry, all illustrate the depth and range of research that has been undertaken for this release.

It should come as no surprise that examples of work of the previously credited Benny Soebardja also feature on this release. Evil War, a politically charged fuzz rocker, taken from Ghede Chokra’s, Shark Moves’ 1973 album. Formed in 1972, this group heralded him as one of the archipelago’s most progressive rock musicians, although they were never successful as recording artists in their homeland. Following the demise of this band, Benny formed Lizard, from whom the quite splendid Candle Light track is taken, prior to forming the commercially successful Giant Step.

Musically, this is an extraordinarily excellent compilation that succeeds admirably in capturing the essence and magic of the time. With not a duff track to be heard and excellent, comprehensive liner notes from Chadra Drews, it cannot be faulted from a musical perspective. The same plaudits, however, cannot be given to the package overall. By way of explanation, perhaps it would be prudent to explain that this review has been written on a product that I purchased, as opposed to being provided by a PR, record company or artist, therefore is not a case of ‘looking a gift horse in the mouth’ My triple vinyl LP set seemed to be poorly pressed, the lead-ins so short that it was difficult to place the stylus correctly, with uneven edges and small pieces of vinyl ‘burrs’ present. The paper sleeves are poor quality, and whilst the liner notes are indeed wonderfully informative, they do not exactly match the track listing on the vinyl itself and, most disappointingly, are not provided as a physical copy and have to be downloaded with a code, which in my case was corrupt, (although to their credit, Now-Again Records, in the US, did sort this out, via email within two or three days). I believe that the CD version of this release provides a physical copy, which would certainly be preferable to running off some 33 A4 pages, many of which are full-colour band photos and album covers.

Notwithstanding these issues, this is an important historical compilation featuring some wonderful music which compares very favourably with that emanating contemporaneously from the West.
